What can I do to serve with Frontiers in the Muslim world?

If you feel like God is calling you to long-term service overseas, check out How to Serve and explore opportunities available to you today. Or just start The Journey, and we can help you through the process

Can I use my current work skills and education overseas?

There are many opportunities available with existing teams or in pioneering new areas to use your work skills and education to serve. Many countries are looking for people with specialized professions and education levels, but there are no minimal educational requirements to serve in our movement. Check out our How to Serve section for more information on how to join a team or start a new team to an unengaged area.

Do I need to attend a seminary or Bible college before applying with Frontiers?

No. Frontiers believes that relatively inexperienced people can be effective servants in the Muslim World. There are no special educational requirements needed to serve in loving and respectful ways for Jesus. However, we do require applicants to have good spiritual maturity and a support network (sending body) that will help keep them accountable for their spiritual health. (See www.fieldprep.net for more details on assessing spiritual maturity for the field.)

What is the process for going overseas?

Check out “Discovering the Road to the Field” where we have outlined the recommended steps to the field.

What is required to start a new team to the unengaged?

Mostly, you need a passion and pioneering spirit for work in new areas among Muslims. Secondly, you should have exemplary leadership qualities that your church or community has recognized in order to take on this task. Check out the section on team leadership or Church-Based Teams and let us know your vision by filling out The Journey today. We can help you get there every step of the way.

What is the role of the team leader?

The team leader can often be the visionary for serving a particular people group or location and is generally responsible for recruiting a team for the field (although we are glad to help!). Because we are “field-led,” team leaders with Frontiers are not bound by any set of rules – in fact, you tell us what to do! Our field teams are semi-autonomous, so each team leader can do whatever they need to make their God-given vision a reality on the field. Fill out The Journey and let us know how we can help you on your way to team leadership.

What steps do I need to take now to prepare myself for future work with Muslims?

First you can go to a training website, www.fieldprep.net, where you’ll find a Field Preparation Guide as well as a Personal Development Guide that is designed to help you assess yourself and grow in areas to be an effective member on the field. Another practical step is to meet or talk with Frontiers’ regional representatives, who are available to help you discern your next steps. Fill out The Journey and our closest regional representative will contact you.

What are some areas that I need to develop in order to be a fruitful representative of Jesus in the Muslim World?

Our experience tells us that godly, effective ministry among Muslims takes place in five major areas we call “The Five C’s:” Communion, Community, Character, Competence and Content. Being intentional to grow in such areas as worship and spiritual disciplines, committing to active peacemaking, and practicing perseverance through hardships are some of the best proactive ways we can invest ourselves as we seek to be like Jesus among unreached Muslims. You can learn more about the Five C’s on www.fieldprep.net.

How do I get training to go work in the Muslim world?

Training is often already available in your midst and you usually don’t have to wait for training to come to you. We believe that training is a process that you enter into—it’s something that happens to you and not necessarily just an event that you attend. For example, here are some suggested principles you can apply in your current context to start training right where you are:

  1. Try doing something new in your current setting of ministry.
  2. Risk failure.
  3. Learn from mistakes.
  4. Share the Gospel with those around you.
  5. Tell your story.
  6. Hear others’ stories.
  7. Find ways to grow and build a development plan.
  8. Find a mentor and peer who will help you in all of these.

How does Frontiers take care of their members overseas?

Firstly, we come alongside the member’s home church or community to help them take care of their members. Additionally, we provide pastoral coaching and equipping services (through our Member Care team) directly to our members overseas to help them stay and thrive on the field.

What if I’m not ready for a long-term commitment – can I go short-term with Frontiers?

Frontiers offers a number of short-term opportunities from two weeks to two years to help you explore your long-term calling. Check out our short-term opportunities, and fill out The Journey today to let us know how we can help you.
